This is one of a family of plants popularly known as broomrapes. Cistanche phelypaea is unable to produce its own chlorophyll and is totally dependent on the roots of its host plant for its nutrients. This desert species is also found in the Egyptian Sahara. Ingestion has been shown to have considerable medical benefits: lowering cholesterol, anti-ageing, repairing muscle damage.
