Bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum), Glencoe

The plant's scientific name means "bone-breaker" and refers to the traditional belief that if sheep ate it, they would develop brittle bones. In fact, sheep can develop osteoporosis rather through a lack of calcium in their diet, which might occur if they graze in highly acidic moorlands -- which is the habitat of Narthecium ossifragum.
