Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), Fuente de Piedra, Andalucía

Near El Torcal de Antequera lies the extensive nature reserve of Fuente de Piedra where up to 30,000 flamingos breed, mostly greater but a few lesser too. This is the largest breeding population on the Iberian peninsula. Fuente is an endorheic lake -- one without outlet that almost dries out in hot summers. In Andalucía it is a dependable viewing area for a wide variety of wildlife. On this trip it provided me with some of my best images of greater flamingos. Flamingos are more difficult to photograph because of their rather small, unobtrusive eyes, but here the light was perfect.
