Gough's Cave, Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

Hollowed out by the River Yeo, the cave is some 3.4 km long. Most of its length is however only accessible to cave divers.

The remains of several prehistoric-era humans have been found in this cave. Some bones showed signs of their flesh having been consumed by other humans. Human crania had even been used as drinking vessels. Hopefully we have come a little way since then.

One set of remains, known as Cheddar Man, has been dated to 7,150 BC; others have been dated to as early as 12,700 BC. Mitochondrial DNA from the skeleton of Cheddar Man has been claimed to match that of Adrian Targett, a retired local schoolteacher, allegedly making him a distant relative of Cheddar Man.
