The Mew Stone, Skomer Island, with the island of Skokholm in the distance, West Wales

The hard rock of the Mew Stone has become separated from the softer rock of Skomer by the erosion of the latter by the sea. If names such as Skomer, Skokholm and The Wick sound Scandinavian, it is because they are. They are the result of the exploration of the area by Viking raiders over a thousand years ago. Skokholm, curiously, apparently means 'wooded island' in Norse. There are no trees on Skokholm today. Both islands are sites of special scientific interest, Skomer is in addition a national nature reserve, home to half the world population of Manx shearwaters, which visit at night.
