San Gimignano, Tuscany

The stylish hilltop villages of Tuscany, offering vistas of streets that are architecturally still entirely medieval, are often characterised by their tall towers. San Gimignano is a fine example. It dates from at least the 10th century. Tall towers were apparently used to observe the approach of hostile armies, but they became a status symbol too, demonstrating the owner's economic power. San Gimignano had 72 towers at one time. Only about 11 remain. Perhaps the modern equivalent would be the Range Rover, prominently parked on the owner's front drive?

From the photographic point of view, it can be seen that the weather was not with me during my visit to San Gimignano.

Italians told me that in June the climate was usually "brutissimo!"
