Cliffs of St Johns Head, Island of Hoy, Orkney Islands
Hoy was settled by the Vikings and still carries their Norse name for it, Hoy = high island. The name is appropriate. These cliffs on the west coast of Hoy tower 352m above the open Atlantic. The rock is Old Red Sandstone, some 360-420 million years old and to be found in various parts of the North Atlantic region, from Norway to North America.
