Streak-backed oriole (Icterus pustulatus), beginning to build its hanging nest on a mesquite branch, Cuajiniquil, Costa Rica
Mesquite occupies the same ecological niche in the New World as acacia does in the old. It belongs to the same Leguminosae family and has similarly vicious thorns which can even penetrate the feet through the soles of shoes of the unwary, as I know to my cost.
