Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), Naithon, Thailand

The 'sacred lotus' of tropical Asia is a remarkable plant. For a start, it is capable of regulating its tissue temperature as mammals can. An experiment in Australia found that it could maintain a temperature of 35°C when the surrounding air temperature was 10°. Lotuses are very long-lived: an individual plant can be up to a thousand years old. And lotus seeds can germinate after a very long period of dormancy: one seed, dated as 1300 years old, successfully germinated.
