White-chested emerald hummingbird (Amazilia brevirostris), Arima Valley, Trinidad

The 140 or so hummingbird species can be placed in nine groups: Topazes, Hermits, Mangoes, Brilliants, Coquettes, Patagonas, Mountain Gems, Bees and Emeralds. Different bill shapes have evolved to fit different flower shapes, so that several species can co-exist in the same environment. The white-chested belongs to the Emeralds. The amount of emerald green on the chest is variable. This species is approx. 9.5cm long. It is endemic to a small mainly coastal region in the north of South America.
