Bamboo, nature's abstract art, Tobago

Contrary perhaps to popular belief, bamboo is not only native to China, but occurs naturally in many tropical regions, both in the Old World and in the New, including at 4000m above sea level in Ecuador. There are numerous species in several genera but the only species native to the Caribbean is of insignificant size.

Bamboo enjoys many superlatives: the largest grass in the world, the world's fastest growing plant -- 91cm in 24 hours, yes, that is centimetres not millimetres! -- but nevertheless with a tensile strength comparable to steel. In Trinidad and Tobago an Asiatic species was introduced and enormous stands now grow wild in many places. It is put to many uses, including scaffolding and raft construction.
