Alert white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), Guadalhorce delta reserve, Malaga, Spain

The globally endangered white-headed duck was quite a find on the lagoons, although it kept its distance from the hide. The threat to the white-headed duck comes mainly from interbreeding with the American ruddy duck, which was introduced to Europe in the 1930s and 1940s. At one stage pure white-headed ducks were down to fewer than 50 individuals in Spain. There are currently some 2500 birds.
