Palace of the Lions, Alhambra, Granada, Spain

Built by Muhammad V, Sultan of Granada and completed by 1391. One of the finest monuments of Islamic civilisation in Europe. Little wonder that the last Sultan of Granada, Muhammad XII, known as Boabdil, wept as he was forced to evacuate Granada and the splendours of the Alhambra by the Catholic monarchs Fernando of Aragon and Isabel of Castile. Fleeing over a mountain pass to the south of the city he turned for one last look and shed a tear. His mother, in terms that by today's standards would be seen as very sexist, allegedly rebuked him with the words: "Do not weep like a woman for that which you could not defend like a man." To this day the pass is known as El Suspiro del Moro -- the sigh of the Moor.

Swifts -- perhaps the odd pallid -- were constantly wheeling and screaming overhead. I have identified nine in the picture. 170616 279
