Sociable weaver (Philetairus socius) with nest-building material, northern Namibia

This species is endemic to southwestern Africa, where its range in arid savannas is closely linked the presence of stiff grasses (Stipagrostis ciliata) which are used to construct the enormous communal nest, one of the largest built by any bird, and which may house a hundred pairs of weavers, of different generations.

Sociable weavers have an unusually subdued plumage for an African species, but then, if you live in such proximity to large numbers of your own kind, you probably need a bit of peace and quiet.
