Leadwood tree (Combretum imberbe), Waterberg, Namibia

The wood of the leadwood is dark brown and very hard and heavy, as suggested by its name. It is much sought after in the woodcarving industry. The Hereros and Ovambos of Namibia attach special cultural and religious significance to the tree, since to them it is the great ancestor of all animals and humans, and must be passed by with respect.

The wood burns slowly and with intense heat; it is therefore sometimes used in campfires where an all-night blaze is desired, to keep wild animals away.

The species is distributed in savannas from Northern Namibia to Tanzania.
