Wood sandpiper (Tringa glareola), Kemaramaya, Srilanka

The wood sandpiper likes freshwater marshes, wet meadows and flooded fields for feeding -- here seen in a rice paddy.

Feeds by probing soft mud for insects, small crustaceans and aquatic invertebrates.

Breeds in Northern boreal zones (Scandinavia, Russia) and winters in Africa and southern Asia.
