Greater kestrel (Falco rupicoloides), Etosha Pan, Namibia

... perched here on one of the numerous thorny acacia trees that dot the landscape almost everywhere. Often hunts from such a perch, diving to the ground to catch its prey, which consists primarily of insects (grasshoppers, termites, beetles etc), plus lizards, small snakes, rodents and even small birds. Habitat open, arid areas from savannas to semi-desert. Found mainly in southwestern Africa, with disjunct populations in East Africa.
