Puffin portrait, The Wick, Skomer Island, Wales

The breeding range of the Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) includes Iceland (home to circa 60% of the world’s population), Norway, the Faroe Islands, the UK, Ireland, Greenland and eastern North America (Newfoundland, Maine).

Puffins dig nesting burrows in rocky, predator-free coastal areas, with a preference for uninhabited islands.

Outside summer, puffins winter in open ocean waters, sometimes far offshore or as far south as the Mediterranean.
