David Hockney - Early Reflections
At the Walker art gallery Liverpool early works from 1960 til 1978 are being showcased of British icon David Hockneys .I was surprised to see the contrast from his student work to the more well known and appraised pieces such as "Peter getting out of Nicks Pool". You could see the development and potential that as a student Hockney already had , i personally preferred the much more looser and rough work of Hockney's "in the mood for love" from his time at Royal College of Art .As i believe it made me much more intrigued and it created texture from him using oil paints on board , along with confusion which i didn't expect whereas with his other pieces i was familiar and new he was renowned for .These earlier works i felt where more simple and raw and you could tell Hockney was expressing himself. His water based paintings which have won awards show up in the form of swimming pools , this was from the time when Hockney was in California 1964 and was experimenting with various techniques to show his love of water .David Hockney Familiar faces theme i really enjoyed because it again was completely different to what i new and expected from Hockney's work . I really loved the portraits that he produced simple ink and paper "Gregory" 1974 was one of my favourites .Overall i think this exhibition opened up my eyes to see the development that a artist can go through like Hockney dramatically change over the course of 10 years to make who he was a artist.
