Luminescent nanorods as probes for nanoscale dynamics:

Rod-shaped rare earth-doped nanocrystal phosphors exhibit peculiarly polarized luminescence spectra, from which the crystal orientation in 3D can be measured. We employ this to observe rotation of nano-objects and their synchronized assembly. Spectroscopy becomes an eye to see dynamics on the nanoscale.
