BNSF's Cajon Subdivision
Part of the big three mountain passes in Southern California and a railfanning hotspot, as BNSF and UP trackage rights trains between San Bernardino and Barstow battle steep grades through Cajon Pass. As Eastbounds start their 2.2% climb at Baseline and tip the hill at Summit twenty-four miles away, and Westbounds that climb a lesser 1.6% grade that starts at Frost and ends eighteen miles away at Summit. The subdivision also sports a thirty mile high speed section of track from Oro Grande to Lenwood through the Southwest edge of the Mojave Desert along historic route 66.
