Chicago and Northwestern SW8 127 Duluth MN 6-1958

Here's a shot of CNW SW8 127 working the Omaha Depot in Duluth June 1958. The 127 was built in September 1951 as an Omaha Road diesel. The CNW had a controlling interest in the Omaha Road since 1882 and started leasing the company in 1957 until fully merging it into their system in 1972. All Omaha diesels wore CNW paint and many had CStPM&O initials on the cab. The date of this shot is just a guess but is before July 1, 1961 as that is when the DWP stopped running their RDC "Railiner" service to Duluth. The DWP shared the Omaha Depot on 5th Ave in Duluth but also made stops at their own depot in West Duluth. The DWP's RDC, D-301, can be seen behind the 127 here. The D-301 hauled mail until shortly before the train was discontinued and also brought fresh fish for fisheries in the Twin Ports. The CNW's "Duluth-Superior Limited" called this depot home until discontinuation in 1959 and the "Chicago Limited" also called here until at least 1961. The depot was removed in the mid 60s for expansion of the freeway through downtown. The NP also had a freighthouse and TOFC ramp here that had to be relocated to 27th Ave W. in the late 60s. Most of this scene was changed by I-35 making this a classic Twin Ports snapshot that can't be replicated. Duluth, MN June 1958. Unknown Photographer Duplicate Slide from my Collection.
