Northern Pacific RS11 904 Superior WI 9-19-1970

Here's a shot of Northern Pacific RS11 904 resting on one of the Dirt House tracks at Belknap Roundhouse in Superior September 1970. The 904 was built in July 1958 and was retired as BN 4184 in July 1980. The NP RS11s were a staple of the St. Paul and Lake Superior divisions during the NP days, frequenting Duluth pretty much all the time. These were also used on locals and transfers between Duluth and Superior but were mostly road power. After the BN merger in 1970, the RS11s stayed in home territory for most of 1970 but were reassigned to Vancouver WA to consolidate the Alco power in one region. The older RS1 and S series switchers stayed in their home terminals until retirement and were all gone by mid 1973 but the RS3s and RS11s still had life left in them, being built in the mid to late 50s. The RS3s were dropped from the roster in the later 70s and most of the RS11s went in 1980. Superior, WI September 19, 1970. David H. Hamley Agfachrome from my Collection.
