Northern Pacific S2 712 Duluth MN 9-2-1962

Here's a shot of Northern Pacific S2 712 working at Rices Point Yard in Duluth September 1962. The 712 was built in December 1949 and retired as BN 912 in May 1973. NP rostered 13 S2 switchers, numbered NP 700-712 after 1950 and became BN 900-912. NP 701 was traded in to EMD in July 1970 and didn't receive it's BN number but all the rest worked for the BN until 1972 and 1973. BN 907 left the roster after a wreck in March 1971. NP 712 was the last S2 purchased before continuing with S4s in October 1951 starting with NP 713. The pilots of these non MU equipped switchers were quite bare with only a single air hose hanging from under the coupler. Duluth, MN September 2, 1962. Tom Smart Kodachrome from my Collection.
