Great Northern F3A 267A Superior WI 7-1957
Here's a shot of Great Northern F3A 267A leading the morning Gopher train into Superior WI July 1957. This train departed the Duluth depot minutes before and is pulling into Superior before departing for the Twin Cities. The 267A was built in October 1948 and renumbered to GN 369A in 1960. The 369A was converted to a freight unit in June 1969 and was renumbered GN 276B. The 276B became BN 618 and was retired in November 1971, sold to Precision National. There's a lot to see in this scene such as clean GN passenger equipment, the GN owned General Mills elevator in the background, the Pure Oil Co. tank farm on Winter St. and the "Tilting Target" signal above the second F unit. This was more of an eastern US application and was a bit of an oddity here in the Twin Ports. My understanding is that this signal governed movements into the Superior depot and LST&T movements in and out of their yard adjacent to the depot. For more info on this signal, visit the Twin Ports Rail History Flickr page. There was no date on this slide but the front fender of a 56 Chevrolet can be seen so I would guess sometime in the summer of 1957. Superior, WI July 1957.
