IBM System 3
Back in 1982 when I took this picture I was working at Moore-o-matic, a garage door operator manufacturing company located in Waupaca, WI. I was running the paint departmaent when an opening came up for a second shift computer operator. I enjoyed the job and learned all I could about the computers. We had all own software written in COBOL. I took tech school COBOL and accounting classes. Eventually, I ended up as operator, programmer and data department manager all in one. I had one key punch operator.
All good things must come to an end. The company management changed and the computers became seriously outdated. Chamberlain bought out Moore-o-matic and closed the Waupaca factory in favor of one in Mexico.
Today, the once busy factory has become a foundry warehouse. Ironically, I am restoring the old Soo Line railroad depot and the freight house that sat abandoned across from Moore-o-matic. Now the Moore-o-matic factory is the deteriorating old structure.
