James worked for the Bristol Aeroplane Company and was injured in a bombing raid on their Filton works, dying of his injuries at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. He was the husband of Gwendoline Ford of Horfield, Bristol and the son of Walter and Florence Ford, also of Horfield, Bristol. The Personal Inscription at the foot of the grave stone reads 'A voice we loved is stilled a place is vacant which never can be filled Mummy and Tony, Mum, Dad and Eileen.'
