As as Fine Art Photographer, I gather inspiration from as many different mediums as I can. Currently looking at the ambient works of James Turrell I am particularly interested in the way he uses light and tone in order to create a mood and narrative. This is something that can translate directly into my specialist area of fine art and coincides with how I want to develop my working style. My work is very much conceptual based in development and execution with darker more sinister themes connecting pieces. I am obsessed with the ideology of savage beauty and finding something positive in darker situations. Often referencing the Grimm Brother’s fairy-tales and Angela Carter’s Bloody Chamber, my portfolio of work has a desaturated colour palette and often includes surreal elements of content and composition. I’m interested in the ways my work can provoke emotions in my viewers and encourage the feeling of involvement in my digital work by compositing elements into the foreground, and by shooting often at eye level it’s as if viewers are looking on at my characters from the location they’re set. Peeping through the moss or the ivy vines or even feeling the buzz of a location from it’s atmospheric blur is another way I allow my work to convey narrative and character. Using more of a hands on approach, I am also able to express my conceptual thoughts through illustrative methods and have included images from a sketchbook which was made in just four days.
