the Golden Years

These two super carriers are resting at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Bremerton Washington. On the left is the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) to her right is her bestie the USS Independence (CV62).

They displaced over 80,000 tons apiece when loaded and both spent time as the only forward deployed aircraft carrier in the Navy while stationed in Japan as the Kitty Hawk was actually the Independence's replacement for that duty. Indy was retired in 1998 and Hawk in 2009, now they dock side by side while being dismantled for scrap.

Darned amazing sight to see. press L and take it all in. :-)
