Soo/Milw at Kentland

A southbound Soo/Milw empty hopper train makes its way down Conrail's Danville Secondary towards Latta, Indiana at Kentland, Indiana on May 2nd, 1987, with Milw 16-Soo 6602, 106 empty WISX cars and Soo caboose #23. This is most likely train #188. Photos are taken from the location of the old NYC passenger depot at MP IH 61.85. Train was running on a clear signal today, so no stopping to work the box like normal. The Conrail Kentland turn was waiting at Sheff to meet 188 so they could come north to switch the industries on the north side of town.

Train was all WISX cars (Wisconsin Power & Light Company) which traversed through here often. Other hopper trains I saw were Pittsburgh & Shawmut, AT&SF, Upper Merion & Plymouth and of course, Soo & Milw trains. Alot of times, #204 was blocked freight-empty hoppers-TOFC. #203-#204 later became CSX trains Q-597 & Q-598 after the CP gave up the business. The blocking was changed and the TOFC rerouted.

Milw SD40-2 #16 was built by EMD as Milw #177 in July of 1973. Locomotive is currently sitting at Silvis, Illinois and lettered NREX #6300, either waiting to be scrapped or bought.

Soo SD40-2 #6602 was built by EMD in April of 1980.
