Makin' Out Like A Bandit
Southbound Soo Line train #204 comes crawling through Kentland on a frigid January 23rd, 1987 evening. Train had Soo #753-HLCX #741-SOO #784, 98 cars, and this Soo Line (a former Milwaukee Road caboose, #992223) bay-window bandit caboose #153. Train is on Conrail's Danville secondary and is about to cross the route 24 crossing. The southbound home signal can be seen at left. The concrete thing at bottom right is where the pipelines went under route 24 when the tower was in service. I had no idea what it was as a child, but we used to throw firecrackers in it...lol
The boxcar ahead of the caboose is HS #11039, a bunkerless refrigerator car with or without ventilating devices and with or without device for attaching portable heaters. Constructed with insulation in side ends, floor and roof to meet maximum UA factor requirement of 250 BTU/F/Hour for 50 foot cars and 300 BTU/F/Hour for 60 foot cars. Equipped with adjustable loading or stowing device. Car was built as LNAC 5939.
Cabooses are 1 thing I have no shortage of from the 80's. Most of the time I missed the locomotives and only caught the caboose. I always loved the caboose so I always at least got that on film.
