NYC 2800 at Sheff

Southbound New York Central extra 2800 north is seen departing Sheff in 1954. This rural location was a hot spot for the NYC with a lot of interchange between their Egyptian and Big 4 lines. There was a tower, turntable and roundhouse, 6 track yard on the Egyptian side nearly 2 miles long, a station, shanty's for track and signal depts, a large watering facility with a pumphouse, a general store, houses and hotel (all on RR property for RR people) and many other facilities. Most of the foundations exist today, and this is a great area to look for artifacts of the past. I have found date nails, keys, property markers (one labeled CCC&StL) and other stuff. I suggest a shovel and a metal detector.....

New York Central Class L2c 4-8-2 Mohawk #2800 was built by Schenectady in March of 1929 and retired in April of 1957, 3 years after this photo was taken.
