NYC Sheff, Indiana--1956 & 1985

Here are 2 photos from near the same spot looking N/W from the roundhouse area at Sheff, Indiana. The steam photo shows a pole over the 6th car in the train that is also in my photo 8 cars back in the train. Here are descriptions of each.

At left, NYC 4-8-2 #2876 is doing some switching in the yard and is on the siding on March 2nd, 1956. There is no other info on this photo. This extra train could possibly have been a turn from Wyton, a train picking up off of the Big 4, or a through freight.

NYC Class L-2c 4-8-2 Mohawk Type #2876 was built by Schenectady in 1929.

At right, Milwaukee Road train #204 comes through the same location about 30 years later on a hot and humid June 3rd, 1985 day. Train had Milw #168-HLCX #5021-Milw #29-Soo #4438, 62 cars and Soo caboose #104. This was sometime well into the afternoon because the walk home back to Kentland was in the dark and during a thunderstorm.

Milw SD40-2 #168 was built by EMD as Milw #3038 in July of 1972.

HLCX SD40 #5021 was built by EMD as PC #6251 in December of 1970.

Milw SD40-2 #29 was built by EMD in July of 1973.

Soo GP38-2 #4438 was built by EMD in June of 1980.
