Soo Line Sunset

Southbound Soo Line train #204 is shown here stopped at the southbound home signal at Kentland, Indiana along Conrail's Danville secondary on the evening of January 23rd, 1987.

I remember it being extremely cold and the crew was having issues with the train. Consist included SOO 753-HLCX 741-SOO 784, 98 cars, SOO bay-window bandit caboose #153.

This view looks south towards the southbound home signal, routes 24/52 and the diamond. The crew eventually let me come up because I was freezing to death...lol

The base for the former 3 headed semaphore southbound home signal is next to the footboard on the trailing unit.

Once you got south of Kentland, there was a whole lot of nothing for a long time. The next actual town south of here is Danville, Illinois which is 43 miles away. At 15 mph, with this train, on this night, on those tracks, on that date, no cell phones? I would be tying it down here....
