1966 & 1987 Kentland, Indiana
Here are 2 photos from almost the exact location in Kentland, Indiana along NYC's Egyptian line. Al Chione took the one at left and I took the one at right. I acquired his copy years ago and luckily, I took so many photos in Kentland that I had 4 to choose from that would match the location. They are looking N/N/E from just north of the Route 24 crossing. Main differences in the photos are that the interlocking signal had been changed from a semaphore to a type-G and moved closer to the diamond. In my photo, the base for the original signal is seen about 3 cars back in the SOO train with the taller standing dead weeds. Also, the rods had been discarded into the ditch at left (out of photo). And, of course, everything track related is falling apart. Below is a brief description of each photo.
Left Photo: NYC southbound train comes into the interlocking at Kentland in May of 1966. This is probably #63 as #85 was a later in the day train. Leading is NYC F7A #1729 followed by 2 geeps. A tank car sits in the backtrack at left. Al Chione photograph.
Right Photo: Soo Line southbound empty hopper train is about to knock the signal down at Kentland on August 14th, 1987 with SOO #778-#739, 118 empty WISX hoppers and SOO caboose #55. Photo by Eric Berg.
