NYC #11 "Mail & Express" At Lake Village

Here is a great old photo of Lake Village, Indiana. Shown is southbound New York Central train #11 stopped at the depot, circa 1912. Train was due here at 9:31 am. View is looking N/W. I've always loved this photo, mainly because of the kid with the "GRIT" newspaper bag....a short cut of cars sits in the background on the siding, one of which looks like it's lettered for the NC&StL RR. The engine number is unreadable but is a good front view. It looks like either a 2-8-0 or a 2-8-2.

As of NYC Illinois Division Employee Timetable No.1, the following is info on Lake Village:

NYC MP IH 36.30 (miles from Indiana Harbor)

Mileage from Chicago was 55.6.

Telegraphic call sign: Unknown. In 1915, the NYC did not list stations and call signs, at least in my timetable. By 1939, my next timetable, Lake Village was not listed under "Stations, Office Calls, Signals and Telephones" as an open train order office with any signals but rather as a "C.S." (Communicating Station) on the "W" (west side) of the tracks with a "T.D." (Train Dispatcher) and "M" (Message) line.

I have not seen or found any special instructions or anything referring to Lake Village in either timetable.

Scheduled to pass here daily were:

SOUTHBOUND

3 1st class trains

2 2nd class trains

2 3rd class trains

NORTHBOUND

3 1st class trains

2 2nd class trains

7 3rd class trains

That's more than I saw in 2 weeks as a kid....
