Monk Parakeet

The Monk parakeet, Also known as the Quaker parrot, has been in Texas for years (among other places) but not many know that unless they look up into the trees, which a lot of people just don't. Photographers do, so they see a lot of things that 'ordinary' people wouldn't.

I know I have frequented areas where they were, I was right in their feeding grounds and I had been shooting birds for a couple of years until I heard an unusual sound in the tree above me. I had to duck too because they were, well, you know, all around me.

Now I know, then I had no clue.

They usually nest in electrical towers.

Taken at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas one early morning as the sun came up. There's a LOT there, I don't know how many, but they are usually in flocks of at least 20, then you may see more come and go. I am guessing that there are around 200 birds, I could be off by 100 or so either way. :)

Scientific name: Myiopsitta monachus
