After a brave but brutal & bloody thirty minute fight both seals were exhausted & collapsed in a heap.

The seal on top is the victor, nostrals flared he is now one of the dominant males & gets to mate with a harem of females, passing on his genes.

This is the bulls one chance of mating in the year & all their energies are geared up for this moment, so for the defeated seal he has lost everything - while his wounds heal he has the humiliation of being an outsider & missing out on mating for this year at least.
