Mini Tree - Photo #1

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

Line – The vertical lines of the stems give a feeling of strength, and the implied vertical line between the shaded part of the wall and the lighter part of the wall adds to it. The random curved lines of the leaves themselves add a more natural, calm feel to the photo, even though it’s indoors.

Texture – The soft light give the leaves a smooth texture, and a soft, almost fluffy texture for the soil. The stems of the plants have a rougher texture. All of these things add interest and a more natural feel to the photo.

Shape – The random shape and location of leaves creates a bit of interest. The organic shape of the leaves are informal and more free flowing. The blurred background (the negative shapes) makes the positive shapes of the flowerpot and the plant stand out more. Also, the flower pot makes an incomplete oval shape that the brain tries to complete, so it draws the eye to that part of the photo.

Emphasis – The blurred background and the fact that the plant is on one of the rule of thirds lines emphasizes the subject. The bright green plant stands out since the background has no bright colours.

Form – The soft diffuse side lighting created by the sun shining through the curtain makes the plant look more 3D. One of the plant stems is further back and it isn’t as sharp as the other one, which creates depth.

Objective 4: Lighting

Since the sunlight is going through the curtains before it hits the subject, in this photo we have soft side lighting. I wanted to take a photo of both the plant as well as the flower pot, and it wouldn’t have as much unity if I took a picture like this outside. I also wouldn’t have the soft side lighting that I got from the curtain, instead I would have hard direct lighting.

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

First I sharpened the photo with unsharp mask to make the plant sharper. Then I added contrast with curves mostly to make the dark spots darker since the bright spots (eg. the window) were already very bright. Finally, I resized it to upload to Flickr.

Objective 6: Critique

I like that I got the background very blurred, one of the plant stems slightly blurred, and the other plant stem tack sharp.

I would have liked to remove at least the calendar and maybe some of the papers on the table before I took this photo, but since it’s all blurred it isn’t too bad.
