MIT - The Sponge
When I was younger, my parents used to tell me "our son, study hard for a better future". I was stubborn and didn't exactly do what they asked me to do. I studied harder and harder, a lot more that what I was told. Then after 20yrs I ended up in one of these cells :). So I guess the take home message is: "Always lesson to your parents"...
Simmons Hall, designed by Steven Holl as an exploration of porosity, built for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the height of the iconic architecture era.
To prevent the construction of a compact block because of the peculiarity of the terrain (long and narrow), who closed with its imposing the free circulation of air and visual Charles River, Holl has designed a building "porous" with a transparent skin and with large openings on the landscape.
Designed like a sponge, construction is defined by exterior walls marked by more than 3,000 small openings, spaced by larger openings in correspondence with common services, with the entrances and outdoor spaces.
