Nelson,GA
In a scene that has been repeated thousands of times shows GNRR GP38 #2000 leading the southbound Tate-Elizabeth local coming through the small town of Nelson,GA. Like most of the small mountain towns in Pickens County, Nelson was created around the marble mining industry. The industry was/is so huge here that it is nicknamed 'the Marble Capital of the World'. Tate Elementary School is built out of marble. Many of the churches at the end of the line in Marietta were built from the marble mined in these towns and shipped by rail. The statue of Abraham Lincoln from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. was even built from the marble mined here. Most of the marble is white, but there is also very rare pink marble and is one of the few places in the world where pink marble is found. The marble is also used for tombstones for the United States Military. Thank you Wikipedia!
