Making Camp
The bell tower and Florence seen from the top of the cathedral's dome.
The campanile (bell tower) for the Florence Duomo was designed by Giotto and features reliefs and statues by Donatello and a fair few others.
It stands 276ft high and work on its construction was started in 1334. Giotto dies in 1337, by which time only the first of the five levels was completed.
You can climb to the top of the campanile up the 414 steps and it gives great views out across the city of Florence. It takes a little energy, but there are various levels to stop and admire the views on the way up and down should you so choose.
