Jewel-Osco, Dunning Square, Chicago, IL

This 57,000 sq. ft. Jewel-Osco is located in the Dunning neighborhood of Northwest Chicago.

Interesting story: The store was built in 1987 on the site of a 19th Century insane-asylum and mental hospital. The state closed the hospital and sold the land to developers in the 1980’s. While the Dunning Square Shopping Center was being constructed in the 80’s, patients bodies were uncovered and excavated.

Most of the 4 Jewel Osco stores I visited were pretty bland-looking outside (similar to Pathmark stores) but they all were in relatively good shape and all had recently been renovated inside. Unlike Jewel’s sister Acme stores located where I live--which are similarly clean and modern, yet painfully devoid of shoppers—the Jewel stores were all busy stores. Many of them were nestled inside densely populated urban neighborhoods with lots of customers walking to the stores.

The Dunning Square store had a unique combination of the Supervalu decor package and the most recent New Albertsons package. My best guess is that a full renovation was installed during the Supervalu era and that a refresh was completed recently, when a Mariano’s Fresh Market opened in nearby Norridge, IL.
