Superfresh / Waldbaums Fresh, Staten Island, NY

A&P installed the original Fresh Market decor package into A&P, Waldbaums and Superfresh stores with very slight changes to adjust for the corresponding banner. The giant wallboards which were placed around the perimeter of the store had the word "fresh" in the bottom left-hand corner for A&P and Waldbaums, while Superfresh got the round Superfresh 'S'. For Waldbaums, the leaf that served as an apostrophe in the Waldbaums logo was attached to the word "fresh", while A&P got the A&P sunrise logo.

The Fresh Market decor package also featured nostalgic scenes from early A&P stores which was printed and attached to particleboard which ran across the top of refrigerated cases, which you can see here. IMHO, it was one of the nicest touches added to the Fresh Market stores. Needless to say, many of the classic scenes featured A&P logos or the words "Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company". If you compare the 2 pictures here, in the Waldbaums version, any reference to A&P has been photoshopped out. For example, compare the delivery truck from the A&P on the left with the very same truck at the former Waldbaums at the right. The round A&P logo has been edited out at Waldbaums, as have many other instances of the logo (the coffee service) if you look closely.

Superfresh has arrived in New York City! This 40,000 s. ft. store is not only the first Superfresh in New York, but it is located less than 10 miles from Key Food's corporate headquarters, which may help to explain why this store is so different from the Bloomfield, NJ and Paterson, NJ Superfresh stores that Key Food has opened so far.

The Superfresh here on Amboy Road in the Pleasant Plains neighborhood of Staten Island held its grand opening the week before memorial day, and replaces a longtime Waldbaums Fresh store (which was possibly a former A&P)
