The Whispering Knights
The Whispering Knights, a cluster of four upright stones around a fifth. The group is believed to form a burial chamber.
The Rollright Stones consist of three groups: The King's Men, The Whispering Knights, and The King Stone (which isn't actually a group just a single stone).
The stones are prehistoric monuments dating between 4th and 2nd millennium BC (depending on the group). The Whispering Knights form an Early to Middle Neolithic dolmen. The King's Men, form a stone circle dated to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. Lastly the King Stone, a single monolith believed to be a Bronze Age grave marker.
Local legends have grown around the stones, particularly about their origin. A King and his army were moving across the country when they met Mother Shipton, a witch, who promised the kingdom if the king could see over the brow of the hill in seven long strides. Whilst the king's men discussed the prophecy amongst themselves, the king strode forward but the ground rose up to block his view. The witch cursed them all and turned them to stone, including a group of treacherous knights who were behind the main group.
