Embroidered Silk Satin

Coat, 1918

Embroidered silk satin and rabbit fur

The chirpy, a ceremonial garment worn by women in Turkmenistan, inspired the decoration on this coat. The Central Asian country is renowned for the quality of its embroidery. A chirpy usually combines geometrics shapes and highly stylised flowers in bright colours. Here, Gabrielle Chanel retains the traditional patterns, but applies them in a range of neutral tones more suited to her personal style.*
