Embroidered Silk Satin
Coat, 1918
Embroidered silk satin and rabbit fur
The chirpy, a ceremonial garment worn by women in Turkmenistan, inspired the decoration on this coat. The Central Asian country is renowned for the quality of its embroidery. A chirpy usually combines geometrics shapes and highly stylised flowers in bright colours. Here, Gabrielle Chanel retains the traditional patterns, but applies them in a range of neutral tones more suited to her personal style.*
From the exhibition
Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto
(September 2023 to March 2024)
The first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. It charted the establishment of the House of CHANEL and the evolution of her iconic design style which continues to influence the way women dress today.
