Bronze Temple Threshold

This capped a flight of steps in the temple of the god Nabu at Borsippa. The pattern represents a carpet decorated with rosettes. There is a curved recess for a column. The inscription along the front records restoration of the building by Nebuchadnezzar II. Similar inscriptions are also stamped on the bricks used in the king's other buildings. People crossed this threshold for at least 300 years as the temple is known to have been further repaired in 268 BC. At some point the right-hand half of the threshold was sawn off. The deep cut at the back edge was evidently a false start.
