Covering words using thread.

These were the first pieces of experimentation I did for my Unit 5 project 'Deconstruction Reconstruction'. I used different sewing patterns to cover up the text and names on the page. I was looking at metaphorically deconstructing a book by taking away the ability to read it, if you cannot read the text of a book because it is covered - it has no purpose, therefore its meaning has been deconstructed. On most of them I just covered up the words, but the one in the centre I connected the words relating to Satan and Jesus together, Satan using black thread and Jesus using white. I am interested in the way the two sets of thread intertwine together, suggesting that the connotations between Satan and Jesus are the same thing. When I finished these pieces, I realised that they could be used as part of a religious protest, which they are not in this case, but I think they could be viewed like that especially because the crossing out of the names and the connection between Satan and Jesus. In these pieces as well, the feeling of entrapment is portrayed. Where the words have been crossed out, it comes across as if they are stuck behind the thread - making them look like they are trapped or have been confined in some way. This gives the words a human feel because they seem vulnerable.
