Short eared owl in flight

A bird that has been on my wish list for a long time (actually since I got out of diapers, and luckily I saw it now before I end up in diapers again) is the short-eared owl. They are hardly found in the Netherlands, you really have to know where they are. According to the dutch website for bird protection, there are about 100 breeding pairs, and another 100-500 wintering ones.

Again, I have looked for a long time via waarneming.nl to see if they can be found near Utrecht, but the chance of seeing them here is almost zero.

It is somewhat ironic when you see that they have currently set up camp on the largest industrial estate in the Netherlands, namely the second Maasvlakte.
