a mysterious bird
A bird that I have had on my wish list, to do list, top ten list and bucket list for a long time. One that you rarely see and sometimes hear with a whoop(a) whoop(a) sound.
I remember all the times I've seen him/her fly. Once in Canada (far away and out of focus), on the Markerwadden, about 10 kilometers away (I didn't even bother), and last year in Arkemheen, when I turned around and saw him/her crossing the ditch about 40 meters away and immediately saw it dive into the reeds (unfortunately).

Two weeks ago was the moment I've been hoping for for about 10 years, it passed me by 3 times. The first time I thought it was a purple heron until I looked back at my photo. After that he/she passed by twice more.
The next day I returned with a friend, and while we were happily chatting on a bench in the sun, the bittern took off, less than 10 meters away. Then of course I was too late again. But I know where it is now, so who knows...
